Jan Bergström Young Geoscientist Award (15-05-30)

The late Professor Jan Bergström dedicated his professional life not only to his chosen field of paleontology, where he became an international expert on early arthropod evolution and evolutionary mechanisms during the Cambrian, but also to the development of geology in Sweden, and not least, to the Geological Society of Sweden, Geologiska Föreningen.

To honor his memory and service, the Geological Society of Sweden has created the Jan Bergström Young Geoscientist Award. This award will be given annually to a geoscientist at the start of her/his career who through original research has made significant contributions in earth sciences.

The award consists of a certificate, the amount of 10 000 SEK, and membership for one year in the Geological Society of Sweden, if not already a member.

  • The award will be based mainly upon senior-authored papers published early in the candidate’s career.
  • The award will be given to a geoscientist with a clear connection to Sweden, either by nationality, place of employment, or active research in Swedish geology. The candidate need not be Swedish or employed in Sweden.
  • The candidate should have completed a PhD within the last 7 years (completion date 2009 or after).

Nominations should be sent to Geologiska Föreningen, c/o Mark Johnson by April 15th. The nomination should include a CV and a letter of recommendation from a senior researcher.
